Rory Lowther Memorial Challenge 2011

The Rory 2011 will be held at Swinburne on the 4-6 march 2011.

The one-day sport climbing, bouldering and hiking challenge takes place in Swinburne, Free State Province, South Africa.

Teams are made up of two, navigating themselves from one boulder or route to the next, challenging their ability to complete each discipline successfully in order to collect enough points. Later, participants are encouraged to take part in the Burn-...a-thon activities, resulting in healthy provincial rivalry. The event also features a time of remembrance to fellow climbers, who have sadly left us, done at sunset on the Saturday evening.

In our goal on improving “The Rory”, this year we will be introducing, “The Night of the Stars Speed Climbing Competition,” for the first time in South Africa, a live inter Provincial Climb-off competition, between at least 3 province’s ‘Star’ climbers, 2 in a Team, live from a lit up Spearhead Rock, a video broadcast of the competition will be beamed down to a Big Screen with Live Commentary to the Festival area at base camp. Big prizes will be involved for the select ‘Stars’ from their provinces… …WOW! Bring on this fantastic event as local support will make it a “Night to Remember!” Our Guest Speakers – will be the ‘Stars’ doing the talking at what they do best…. Climbing! On Sunday morning there will be Search & Rescue Demonstration and Safety Competition.

The official Prize Giving ends the week-ends festivities. Not only do the challenge participants enjoy good climbing, bouldering, hiking and fun, they are a part of the camaraderie and competition of mountaineers who are helping to “climb the challenge” in developing Rock Climbing in South Africa, with safety in mind.
