Magoebaskloof Hike - 19 to 22 May 2011

Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail is situated in the Tzaneen area of the Limpopo Province. It is a scenic trail, surrounded by the aroma of pine trees and the calls of emerald cuckoos and knysna loeries. There are many trail options in Magoebaskloof. Explo has chosen an awesome route which is 4 days hiking on the trail, and 3 nights in huts with braai areas.

Most of the hiking is through magnificent sub-tropical, indigenous forest, o...ver craggy ravines and alongside cascading waterfalls, pristine mountain streams, rivers and dams. Some of the trail also goes past the tallest planted trees in the southern hemisphere, some being 83m tall and 115cm in diameter.

We will meet at the climbing wall, carpool and drive towards Tzaneen, to the De Hoek Hut (+-340km). We will leave our cars there, pack our bags and do a short hike to Dokolewa Pools Hut. This hut is built in the forest, right next to pools and bum slides. We wil then spend the day swimming in the pools and the night drinking as much of the alcohol as possible (it will be Klip’s Birthday!)… the rest of the beautiful 42km trail will begin the next morning…

Hiking Route

Day 1 – 2km - De Hoek Hut (car park) to Dokolewa Pools Hut
Day 2 – 8.4km – Dokolewa Pools Hut to Woodbrush Hut
Day 3 - 15km – Woodbrush Hut to Waterfall Hut
Day 4 - 18km – Waterfall Hut to De Hoek Hut (car park)

There is also an option to stay over after the last day at De Hoek Hut and drive back early the next morning (Monday 23 May). De Hoek is the only hut with hot water, so a good shower can be looked forward to. This will cost an extra R95 for the night, and we will need to book it, so let us know if you are interested.

Costs:
R300 for the trail + badge to sew onto your backpack
Travel: +-R150 4 people per car
Food + Drink: +- R150 additional – purchase on your own account

Only 16 spots are available for the hike. Confirmation and payment is required by 5 May (2 weeks before the trail starts). Don’t delay, this hike will get booked quickly!

Preference will be give to current Exploratio members, but if you are not yet a member you are still welcome.

If you want to stay an extra night at the end of the hike instead of driving back, you can deposit an extra R100 into my account and I will try and book the last hut for you for that last night.

You will still need to budget for your food and drink (there will be fresh water on the trail) and transport.
